Self-Dimming Light Switch April 2014

Can you give me the schematic for a light switch that automatically dims the lights between, say, 10 pm and 6 am? I want something in between total darkness and blazing brightness for raiding the kitchen refrigerator in the middle of the night.

Sweep Generator Range March 2014

I have a Heathkit sweep generator 1274 which I bought with the hope I could quickly determine the frequency response of amplifiers I play with from time to time. However, there is no way to determine the range of the pattern on my scope — at least none that I have figured out. I’m not very advanced in such matters. Is there any easy way to add blips to the pattern say at 12 kHz and or 15 kHz?

Prototype to Production January 2014

After about five years of building prototypes, I've finished the design for a device that I believe can be sold to the masses. What's my next step? Is it worth spending money on a patent attorney? Is there a clearing house of sorts that connects developers in the US with production houses in China?  Has anyone been down this road and care to share their experience?

Answers

While I do not have an answer to your question about bringing a product to market, I know my self and others would be interested. If someone does give you the answers/help that you need would it be possible to keep a journal on the process and maybe submit an article to Nuts & Volts on how the process went for you. It may inspire others that have designs/prototypes to get theirs on the market.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Motor Selection November 2013

I want to rotate one 40 lb metal triangle up 90°. Its base will be connected by a hinge to the base of another triangle. The base is 67.88"; the other legs being 48", and a height of 57.87". By rotating the apex of the triangle 90°, the apex would travel an arc by 8.18 ft. I intend to use two sprockets and a chain connected to a motor. What size motor will I need to use to complete this and how is it determined? I understand w = fd and P = fd/t. I would like the time to be six seconds.

Can someone please help with the answer and also show me how to figure this problem out for myself?

Arduino isn’t Keeno October 2013

I developed a great project in Processing and then — when I went to port it to the Arduino — it didn't fit. Is there a utility for Processing or some way of telling when I'm close to the hardware limits of the Arduino?

Camcorder To Security Cam June 2013

I have many old MiniDV or Hi-8 camcorders that still work very well as far as the camera and monitor, not so much for the recorder portion.

Has anyone thought of re-purposing these to just use the camera portion for a security/process monitor camera? Some old camcorders have superb resolution, a very low lux rating for color, and great remote control functions for focus, iris, and zoom. I would need to disable the time-out function for the recorder, which saves the heads if not running for a while by shutting down. Saves a lot over getting a PTZ camera — if you need the P & T, a small servo could do that function.

Anyone tried this? Please post your experience.

Movement Logging Circuit May 2013

Can someone make an experimental circuit that uses a motion detector? I want to feed the signal to a microcontroller for logging movement or object identification.

Cell Phone Detection May 2013

I work at a counseling center where it's best to limit phone calls for the mental well-being of the residents. Is there any way to detect a cell phone in the building, either by an available device or a homebrewed circuit? Is there a way to find a hidden or lost cell phone? Is there a way to log cell phone presence, signal usage, and strength? Just show whether there was a signal, the time, and the strength (how close).

Propeller Balance Meter March 2013

I’m building a propeller balance meter. This unit was designed and built for in-house use at Rockwell International (North American Aircraft Corp.) Columbus, OH.

There were approximately 200 additional units that were built for Rockwell's Aero Commander dealers around the late 1960s. It uses a velocity type pick-up which is what I need. Best as I can find out, it was a type MU 6-7 Pn. B 11032-1.

If anyone knows where I can get one of these pick-ups or what could be substituted, I would appreciate any help; a used or surplus part is preferred.

Camera Into Plasma TV monitor April 2013

I have tried connecting a color security camera to a Maxent (MX-42 HPM20) plasma TV without great results. Either the color hues are bad or it goes from color to monochrome and back again, all under great lighting conditions. The camera's composite out goes directly into the TV's AV1 or AV2 input. The TV's other inputs work fine and the camera looks great on another monitor. What's going on here?
